Tomar conta

Apressando-nos para casa, o vento ostenta que não nos valeríamos ao relento se não fosse Verão. E, contudo, quem nos vale são pessoas que também não sobreviveriam ao relento, ainda que tantas o façam. "Nesta vida, não apenas temos mas somos os nossos corpos." Aço, cimento, tijolo, pele: fronteiras que o fogo ou a água facilmente arrasariam. Subindo a escada do prédio, vinda da rua, Mini, a caniche de um vizinho bombeiro, ladra como um cão de guarda ligado à electricidade. Não precisamos de saber como nos chamamos para tomarmos conta uns dos outros. Talvez tomar conta também seja andar equivocado sobre quem está próximo, conclusão contrária à nostalgia pelo tempo em que os vizinhos se conheciam bem.

Inner life

The imagination – whether pictorial or later linguistic – is especially good at emotional communication, and this might have evolved because emotional information drives action and shapes adaptive behaviour. We have to remember that the imagination itself started as an adaptation in a hostile world, among social primates, so perhaps it is not surprising that a good storyteller, painter or singer can manipulate my internal second universe by triggering counterfactual images and events in my mind that carry an intense emotional charge. Fantasy that really moves us – whether it is high or low culture – tends to resonate with our ancient fears and hopes. The associational mind of hot cognition – located more in the limbic system – acts as a reservoir for imaginative artists. Artists such as Edgar Allan Poe, Salvador Dalí, Edvard Munch and H R Giger can take controlled voyages to their primitive brain (an uncontrolled voyage is madness), and then bring these unconscious forces into their subsequent images or stories.

Creatures of ideas

The ascendant position of science in our world (...) is due to the tangible results in scientific theories - from steam engines to electric lights to computers and cell phones - none of which should be underestimated. To one degree or another, every person on earth is both a beneficiary and a victim of scientific invention. It does not follow, however, that reading history, philosophy, poetry, and novels or looking at works of visual art or listening to music does not also transform people's lives, both for better and worse. Although such changes may be less tangible, it does not render them less real or somehow inferior to the effects of technology. We are also creatures of ideas.
